シューメーカースツール 石目模様モデル

お尻の形に沿うように削り出された座面が特徴的な〈SHOEMAKER STOOL〉。
その起源は15世紀のデンマークに遡り、牛の乳搾りに使われた3本脚のスツールが原型とされています。

17世紀には木靴をつくる靴職人たちが日常的に使用し、座面が磨耗でそれぞれの体に馴染んだことから、より快適な座り心地を求めて自ら座面を削り出すようになりました。こうして誕生したのが〈SHOEMAKER STOOL〉のルーツです。

時代を超えて愛され続けたその普遍的なフォルムは、2024年度グッドデザイン賞を受賞。
今回、その歴史あるデザインに、日本の職人が石目模様吹付塗装を重ねました。

もともとお盆の裏に施されてきた伝統技法を現代に再解釈。
光や角度によって座面の曲線美に陰影が生まれ、北欧デザインと日本の技が交差する一脚となっています。

Shoemaker Stool – Ishime Finish Model

The Shoemaker Stool features a signature saddle-shaped seat, carefully carved to follow the natural contour of the human body.
Its origins date back to 15th-century Denmark, where the three-legged stool was used for milking cows.
By the 17th century, wooden clog makers began using similar stools daily, and as the seats naturally wore down to fit each artisan’s body, they started carving their own for greater comfort.
This custom-led evolution gave rise to the timeless Shoemaker Stool design we know today.

Honored with the 2024 Good Design Award, the stool’s universally beloved form continues to endure across eras.

For this special edition, Japanese artisans have applied a traditional “Ishime” (stone-texture) spray finish to the surface—an artisanal painting technique historically used on the underside of serving trays.
Reinterpreted here for a modern context, the finish casts subtle shadows along the curved seat, enhancing the natural elegance of its form.
The result is a striking fusion of Scandinavian design and Japanese craftsmanship.
