〈ISHINOMAKI STOOL〉は、アメリカの家具会社ハーマンミラーが主催したワークショップのために誕生しました。
石巻工房のメンバーは仮設住宅の現状をリサーチし、住民がビールケースを椅子代わりにしていたことや、踏み台・玄関の腰掛けが求められていたことを知ります。その声に応える形で設計されたのが、このコンパクトで軽やかなスツールです。

今回の別注では、古来より布の墨染めに用いられてきた「松煙染め」を応用。木材特有の赤みを抑え、木目の濃淡を生かした深いグレーの表情を実現しました。布から木へと技法を拡張する挑戦により、唯一無二の存在感を放つ特別なモデルとなっています。

ISHINOMAKI STOOL – Aged-Dyeing Model

The ISHINOMAKI STOOL was originally designed for a workshop hosted by the American furniture brand Herman Miller.
During the project, members of Ishinomaki Laboratory researched the conditions in temporary housing after the 2011 disaster and discovered that residents were using beer crates as makeshift seating, and that small stools or steps at entrances were in demand.
This compact and lightweight stool was designed in direct response to those needs.

For this special edition, we applied an aged-dyeing technique inspired by “shōen-zome”—a traditional method of ink dyeing using soot from pinewood, originally used for fabrics.
By adapting this approach to wood, we were able to neutralize the reddish tones characteristic of the material and reveal a rich, nuanced gray that highlights the natural grain.

This bold attempt to transfer a dyeing technique from cloth to wood results in a one-of-a-kind finish that gives the stool a quiet yet striking presence.
